Should You Repair or Replace Your Furnace?

Canadian winters can be particularly challenging but thankfully, you can rely on your furnace to keep you warm during this season. If you are still feeling the chill inside your home, you may have an issue with your furnace. You may be facing a simple fix or you may need to contact a professional to replace certain parts such as the gas valve, control board, vent inducer, hot surface igniters, motor, pressure switches, limits, and more.

When Should You Replace or Repair Your Furnace?

To keep your furnace working in peak condition, it should be inspected and serviced every year by a certified gas fitter. Some of the most important things we do during our inspection are a gas manifold test, carbon monoxide test, and a combustion analysis to ensure the furnace is burning correctly. Without completing these tests, your furnace has not been properly serviced. Since your furnace moves air throughout the home, a crack or hole in its heat exchanger can easily spread around lethal amounts of carbon monoxide. To prevent your furnace from risking the health and safety of you and your family, contact a professional for help in repairing or replacing your system today.

How to Determine if You Need a Furnace Repair or Replacement?

Use the following list to learn if you need to call on our technicians for a furnace repair or replacement:

Age of Furnace: If the furnace is older than 20 years, it may be a good idea to look at a replacement. The reason we advise this is because after 20 years, if you have not had any major part failures yet, you will likely see them failing soon. Parts such as the control board, gas valve, vent inducer, and blower motor are 4 of the most expensive components to replace on a gas furnace. If you were to replace all these parts on your furnace, you may end up spending at least half of the cost of a new one.

Bills are Higher: Fuel efficiency should be a big factor in your decision of whether or not to repair or replace your furnace. An older system could be costing you more since your furnace has to work harder and burn more fuel in order for your home to reach a comfortable temperature. If you notice a big difference between your current heating bill and bills from previous years, you may need to consider replacing your furnace.

Experiencing Frequent Repairs: Reoccurring repairs could indicate that your furnace can no longer bounce back like it used to. An unreliable furnace that constantly needs repairs could leave you without heat on cold days and ultimately end up costing you more than having it replaced entirely.

Inspect the Components: If your furnace shuts down unexpectedly, that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to replace it immediately. This may happen as a result of poor venting installation, blocked ducts, or a clogged filter. In addition, loud noises, a broken switch, and thermostat issues are all problems that can be assessed and repaired by a professional instead of acquiring a replacement unit.
