How Does a Tankless Water Heater Work?

Tankless water heaters are highly efficient, economical, and can provide endless hot water, all while keeping your utility bills low.

How a Tankless Water Heater Works

Tankless water heaters have grown in popularity over the last decade as more and more people are switching away from bulky traditional heaters and moving to the more energy efficient and space saving tankless systems to provide hot water to their homes. But how do they work?

  1. When you open a hot water tank, the tankless water heater detects a flow and the sensor activates in order to determine the amount of hot water required.
  2. The igniter activates and the gas control valve opens to supply the correct amount of gas.
  3. The burner ignites, providing a flame to heat the water.
  4. Cold water is preheated in the secondary heat exchanger which then passes through to the primary heat exchanger.
  5. The unit determines the outgoing set temperature and adjusts the flame accordingly; heated water moves to the buffer tank.
  6. Desired amount of hot water is then delivered to the faucet.
  7. Voila! Hot water, on demand!

The Benefits of a Tankless Water Heater

There are a number of benefits when it comes to having a tankless water heater in your home:

Energy Efficiency – Traditional tank water heaters have to constantly heat the water, whereas tankless heaters only heat as much water is required. By heating the water on demand, tankless units, like the Navien tankless water heater, can reduce energy use by 24% to 34% compared to traditional water heater tanks.

Economical – Tankless water heaters use less energy which naturally lowers your utility bills. ENERGY STAR® estimates the average household can save hundreds of dollars every year by converting to a tankless unit.

Longer Life Span – Tankless water heaters have been proven to last five to ten years longer than traditional tank water heaters. With proper maintenance, tankless water heaters can provide up to 20 years of use.

A Navien tankless water heater can conserve almost 27% to 50% more energy than traditional tank models while servicing every high-demand point in your home, including the bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room.

Saves Space – A traditional hot water tank can hold between 40 to 60 gallons of water and often measure about 60 inches tall and 24 inches wide. Because tankless water heaters are far smaller, they take up much less space in your home. The standard size of the average tankless heating unit is 28 inches tall by 20 inches wide and 10 inches deep.
