One of the most common questions we get every year as the weather starts to heat up is “can I get AC in my home?” There are a number of things you have to take into consideration before you can have AC installed in your home. Here’s what you need to know first.
Air Ducts
You can only install central air if you have a furnace with air ducts to the areas of your home that you want cooled. For example, if you just have a boiler system or electrical baseboards, central air conditioning isn’t an option for your home. In this case, however, a ductless split system may be an option to cool specific rooms.
Furnace Compatibility
Will your current furnace support the addition of an Air Conditioner? Many people don’t realize that furnaces and ACs need to be paired to work together properly. This means that you may have to upgrade your furnace if you want to install AC. Space
The amount of space you have available is also a factor when it comes to installing AC. Look at your outdoor space and determine whether you have enough room outside for the air conditioning unit. The route that the refrigerant lines have to be run that connect the furnace coil to the outdoor AC unit will place limitations on where the AC unit can be placed. There are also clearances and decibel levels near windows that should be considered.
Voltage
If you don’t already have one, you will need to install a high voltage electrical outlet for the AC unit. Air conditioning requires high voltage electricity to run, which many people neglect to consider before deciding to install an AC unit. If you don’t have a high voltage electrical outlet, you may need to get an electrician in to install one before you can add air conditioning to your home. Have a load assessment completed by an electrician to ensure you have enough amps on your panel.
