How to Take Care of Your Radiant in-Floor Heating System

October 16, 2024

When it comes to radiant in-floor heating, it is important to ensure that your boiler is running using the correct settings and configurations required to prevent damage or disruption to your heating system.

Traditional Boilers

If you have a traditional boiler and radiant in-floor heating, the importance of a primary/secondary piping configuration cannot be overstated. In primary/secondary piping (this keeps the pumps separate so they don’t interfere with each others flow rate), the thermostat/ zone valve initiates the boiler whenever any part of the radiant floor system calls for heat. This creates a circulating loop of hot water between the heating mechanism and a pair of closely spaced tees that intersect with a secondary loop. This prevents the overheating of the boiler while ensuring that the appropriate amount of fluid is circulating through the radiant floor system.

If you have radiant in-floor heating, make sure that you have a primary/secondary piping configuration and have it inspected annually to ensure that it is working properly.

What Does the Mixing Valve Do?

The mixing valve allows your system to run at 2 temperatures. Higher temperature for the baseboard heat and the boiler itself and lower temperature for radiant in-floor heating.

Combi Boilers

The future of radiant in-floor heating is the combi boiler. This is because combis can operate at two temperatures to provide safer temperatures for the in-floor pipes and the higher temperatures for hot water service. This means that the combi boiler itself regulates the temperature and flow of the water properly, so you can simply set it and forget it.
